10 Books That Have Changed My Life

I have always been an avid reader. When I was a child, one of my favourite things to do was sit down and bury my nose in a book all day long. On the school holidays when I would visit my Great-Nan and Pa, I would beg them to take me to the library and I would borrow as many books as I possibly could. It wasn’t unusual for me to read a novel a day (or more!). I loved escaping to another world, getting engrossed in the characters and the story. My favourite books in primary school were: The Baby-Sitters Club, Goosebumps, Sweet Valley High, anything Judy Blume, The Magic Faraway Tree, Harry Potter – just to name a few!

Now that I am older I find myself gravitating towards self-development books more so than fiction. I love to learn and will always be a life long learner so for me books give me the chance to continue to learn and fine tune my craft.

It was an extremely difficult process picking the top 10 books that have changed my life emotionally and spiritually so I hope that I have done it justice…

  1. The Harry Potter Series – J. K. Rowling
You may be surprised that I have included this series on a list of life-changing books, but for me it was! I will never forget being in grade 6 and discovering Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone and devouring it. I loved the magic and the way it made me believe in a whole new world. And almost 19 years later and I am still obsessed! Never underestimate the power of believing in magic for your emotional and spiritual well-being.
  2. You Can Heal Your Life – Louise Hay
This was the first self-help book that I ever read and WOW was it the catalyst for SO much. It is deep, it is mind blowing and it really does help start the healing process.
  3. May Cause Miracles – Gabrielle Bernstein
I love anything by Gabby so it was hard to pick just one book! This book is a a 40-Day Guidebook of Subtle Shifts for Radical Change and Unlimited Happiness. The reason I chose this book out of all of Gabby’s books is because it takes it a step further and REALLY gets you to do the work with practical exercises for 40 days. I have more in depth blogs (some over my very very first blogs) about this book here, here, here, here, here and here. You can also read about my experience at Gabby’s Aussie Workshop here.
  4. A Return to Love – Marianne Williamson
This book is basically the “Cliffs Notes” of a metaphysical text called A Course in Miracles. I really connected with the message of this book and it offers a lot of empowerment and comfort which can help you find the light in your life. You can read about my experience with Marianne here.
  5. I Can See Clearly Now – Dr W. Wayne Dyer
Wow this book…I mean just go and buy it immediately. The self-awareness and humility that Wayne shares in the book and his ability to transcend his life experiences will blow your mind and change the way you look at your own life. You can read about my experience with Wayne Dyer here.
  6. Dying To Be Me – Anita Moorjani
I heard Anita share her story at a Hay House event and immediately purchased her book and read it from cover to cover in one night. Anita’s journey from living a life that wasn’t her own, which almost killed her, to transforming her near death experience to live a life led by her authentic truth is truly inspiring.
  7. The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck – Marc Manson
This book came to me at a really difficult time in my life and helped me to see things with a different perception. It helped me realised what things I really should be giving a f*ck about and what things no longer need my time and attention.
  8. Mastering Your Mean Girl – Melissa Ambrosini
This is a great book (written by a fellow Aussie!) to learn how your inner mean girl (or boy) is holding you back and keeping you stuck, and how you can take back control of your own life by letting your intuition lead the way. You can read a more in depth blog about the book here.
  9. You Are Enough – Cassie Mendoza-Jones
I love the way Cassie (another fellow Aussie!) writes and this book is so gentle and sweet and a perfect introduction into self-development concepts.
  10. Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus – John Gray
If you have ever said to your friend “He just doesn’t understand me!”, then this book is for you! You will find yourself with so many a-huh moments and much laughter as you have those OMG-I-so-relate moments while reading this book. A must read to gain a deeper understanding into the opposite sex.

I hope you have enjoyed reading this blog, it certainly has been a long time coming! Please feel free to share with family and friends that you think may benefit from this blog.

Have you read any of these books? I would love to hear what books have changed your life, emotionally and spiritually, in the comments below. I am always looking for a new book to read!
